Meet The Teacher

Hi! I'm Mrs. Harlan and I feel privileged to be an educator at LHS. I am entering my 18th year in education, my 15th year in RCS(2 yrs at RSMS, 7yrs at LMS), and my 6th year at LHS. I chose to be a Wolverine because I love my students and co-workers and can not imagine leaving here and being happy anywhere else! I truly believe that it is always a good day to be a Wolverine! I love being able to be a part of yall's educational journey, even if it is just getting to know you in the hallway and I am so excited to get to know everyone and watch y'all learn & grow this year.
I grew up not far from here, in Mount Juliet, TN. I graduated from Austin Peay State University with a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies with minors in History and Reading. I also hold an M.Ed. in Curriculum, Assessment, & Instruction from Walden University. I decided in high school that I wanted to be a teacher because I knew I wanted to make a positive impact on as many young minds as possible. I chose to become a reading specialist and interventionist because I know that learning can be difficult for some students and I want to help each of you understand that you are capable of anything you put your mind to. Improving your reading & writing fluency, comprehension, and stamina is really about preparing yourself for the world after high school, whether you continue your education or join the workforce. Together we will determine how each of these skills and more apply to our daily lives while learning and practicing a variety of reading strategies to help students excel in class and prepare them for success throughout high school and beyond graduation. I am thrilled to be here working with each of you and celebrating your progress and successes!
Above all else, I respect each student and their right to a challenging but achievable educational experience. In addition to my responsibilities as the Reading Interventionist, I am a co-sponsor of the Student Council and encourage all students to seek academic achievement, leadership, and community service opportunities.
When I have free time, I enjoy reading, listening to music, hiking, embroidering, and spending time with my husband, daughter, and mini golden retriever.
Some of my favorite authors include Angie Thomas, Jason Reynolds, J.K. Rowling, John Green, Susanne Collins, and Tiffany Jackson. My favorite genres are dystopian and realistic fiction. However, the Harry Potter series holds a special place in my heart. Please feel free to stop by my classroom and chat about books anytime!! You can also send me an email if you have any questions or anything you want to discuss.
